The joys of growing plants

A beauty of a potting shed

At Little Earth we provide for both spontaneous and planned times in the programme for tasting, preparing, cooking and sharing food. Children are often unaware of the connection between plants and the food we eat and gardening provides an excellent opportunity for building that connection.

Our new potting shed is so beautiful, it just calls out to enter! It is going to be a delight to open the door in the morning, not quite sure what to expect, as the sunflowers may have grown another few centimeters, the basil may be ready for picking and the marigolds all of a sudden blossomed into orange.

Our new potting shed will enable the children to garden all year round. They will learn about health and nutrition as they sow seeds, plant seedlings and water and care for them. One of the joys will be to harvest the produce and prepare the food. The final celebration takes place when we all sit around our peacepole, enjoying our home made nutritious meal, may it be a curry, a savoury muffin, with eggs from our chickens, or a chunky vegetable soup. This will be the most rewarding part of our new potting shed, to see how the children take on the responsibilities, and grow in confidence and pride as they display and share the fruits of their labours!
